Predictions For Sunday's Elite Eight Games

Nothing too impressive about picking two number one seeds to win last night (which they did), but at least I wasn't wrong. With these last two games, the Final Four will be set.

Texas over Memphis

Reasons:
  • Never have all four number one seeds reached the Final Four in the history of the NCAA Tournament. And until it happens...it cannot happen...because it has not happened. How insightful is that? Not that Texas is some huge upset, they may have been in line for a number one seed themselves before they lost to Kansas in the Big 12 title game.
  • How can I be FOR Rick Barnes and AGAINST western PA's own John Calipari in a game that matters? I'm not really sure...just call it a hunch.
  • The game is being played in Houston. Who do you think that favors?
  • Memphis has an unfortunate knack for losing in the Elite Eight, having bowed out of the Tournament in this spot the past two years. I don't believe that's because Memphis doesn't have national champion type talent, but I don't think the absurdly soft Conference USA schedule adequately prepares them for crunch time.
  • I feel that A.J. Abrams and D.J. Augustin are well suited to handle the athletic, turnover causing guards of Memphis. Texas defeated UCLA, Tennessee, and Kansas this year...and these two were a huge part of those victories.
  • Confidence in this pick: 6.5

Kansas over Davidson

Reasons:

  • I'm not listing any reasons as to why I'm making this pick. This is what I think will logically happen. That's not to say that this is what I want to happen. Davidson has been on one helluva ride...and I hope it continues.
  • Confidence in this pick: N/A

  1. I know that all #1's are not supposed to make it and Texas has looked good, but Memphis handed it to Michigan State. MSU was never, not even close to ever, in that game. This one will be a great game, but Memphis has looked really really good.

As for Kansas over Davidson. I know that 'Nova is not the best team in D-1, but they aren't a walk over and Kansas just dominated them. I have never seen a team play like Kansas, everything that 'Nova threw at them, they responded to, they made adjustments well, and their players are too good. There should be no justification for this one, Georgetown was a good team, but all season long had trouble scoring (look at their scoring average through this season), Kansas is at a whole different level then Georgetown right now, sorry Davidson, the fun stops here (except at Taco Dell's Curry House).

  2. All #1's ARE supposed to make it!!! That's the idea of making them a #1!!! The thing is they DON'T make it...that's the difference here.

Didn't Villanova lose to Rutgers? Oh no wait...that was Pitt. So much for that course of confrontation.

Question for all: Does Jay Wright go tanning? He must fake and bake in those frigid Philly winters, right?

  3. Actually Villanova did lose to Rutgers, so besides sitting at home right now, that is another thing that Pitt and 'Nova have in common.

As for Jay Wright, does he really look that tan? I think he has naturally olive toned skin, if you want to talk about fake tans or fake sun burns, check out Bobby Knight on ESPN.

Speaking of Bobby Knight, could there be another studio commentator that could care less about what he is doing. I saw him for the first time this weekend (with the Slingbox) and he sat there in the studio looking like he just wanted each and every segment to end. Vitale even tried to joke with him and he just sat there without a response (it was actually pretty funny).

Finally, all #1's are supposed to make it, huh, that's why as a #2 seed Texas got to play in Houston while Memphis travelled to Houston, sounds like that was meant to be. Memphis won, but even with the new podding system, sometimes the #1's get a little screwed.
