Dapper Coaches! - We Had This Theory First!!!
Matt and Phil! Check out this column that breaks down the Tournament based on the appearance and fashion sense of the various coaches. Absolutely creepy. I knew we were on to something here. The whole "Best-Dressed Coach" thing really needs to be turned into a column on this blog now. And I have to eat some crow here because I hated on Jay Wright. I've done a little research and fully admit my mistake. This article has Jay Wright and Villanova defeating Bob Huggins and West Virginia in the National Championship. This creates an interesting dilemma Matt as we basically all agree that those two coaches are on different planets with regard to appearance and fashion sense. This blog just gets better every day.

I know I have a huge Villanova bias, but sometimes I do know what I am talking about. Probably no one on this blog saw the Georgetown v Villanova 2nd regular season game in its entirety, but that was one of the better games of the season and even as close and exciting as it was, Coach Wright still wore the suit like a champ yet still showed he was brazen when yelling at the refs and keeping his team in the game. Page 2 is right, the guy is right out of GQ, except he took a team that was left on its deathbed by "the Rat" Steve Lappas and resurrected it into a team that has made it to the Big Dance 4 years in a row and, pending Reynolds doesn't leave this year, could be a very very good team next year...again.
ReplyDeleteBest Wright moment, when 'Nova upset #1 Kansas in Philly and some random coed, while storming the court, gave Wright a big kiss on the cheek, he reacted like he was a rock superstar and just kept walking. CLASSY (note that I guess this was seen as an unintentional kiss, unlike the Eustachy incident that got him fired from Iowa State)
this bracket is weak. the guy who did this focused too much on one particular appearance/outfit and made that the basis for everything else. bob huggins goes to the championship game on the basis of his "gold ensemble"??? (the link is broken, so i can't look at the photo.) rick pitino gets bounced for wearing a white suit for one half? come on, you have to look at the overall body of work here.
ReplyDeletei also liked the uniform matchup. they have a link to a photo of each uniform.
i found a link to huggins' hideous spectacle. be forewarned, you'll never be able to look at the man the same way again:

Check out this site from 2007, which has another bracket for well-dressed coaches, breaking them down into the Sensational Sixteen, Elegant Eight, and Fashionable Four. The profiles are pretty specific and go deep into basketball facts, not just fashion. There's also an assistant coach bracket. http://www.collegeinsider.com/royale/h_brackets.html
ReplyDeletePhil, thanks for the link to that Huggins outfit, actually that suit fits right in with the West Virginia crowd (although the guy in the background of the picture with his head down and the fact that they got pounded by Cinncinnati that night makes it all the better). That outfit just supports even further the fact that I said he was one of the worst dressed and classless coaches in D-1.
ReplyDeleteAnnie, that fashion bracket much better then Page 2's, two problems in the Elegent Eight. Seth Greenberg? He is a decent coach, but there is more fashion in a suit bought at Sam's Club then what that guy wear's (the picture in the profile is not reflective of his consistent garb at VTech). The second issue I had was with Bruiser Flint because he is in the same town as my boys, I have actually seen him coach in person, no way he is up to Wright's coaching ability or fashion sense. Also, did anyone see a little bias in the final four (check out 3 out of the 4 coaches...just thought this was interesting, is this a statement that a certain race of coaches just dresses better, which could be true based on my memory, or is the website just a little biased)
